Welcome to my little corner of the web. I am an advocate of open source software. Since 2001, I have used open source software almost exclusively. As a programmer using programs that I can get the source code to is very important to me. It allows modification of the code, when desired, to adapt it to my use. Having the source is also a great way to learn new things, if you are curious about how something is done, being able to read the source code can be very helpful.

If you are not a programmer, open source software still has advantages. The number one advantage is that it is free! You can download the software and use it without spending any money. Updates and support are also free. Unlike the free binary programs you can find for PC's and Macs, if the original author of a program moves on to greener pastures and drops the project, someone else can modify the program to make it work on newer systems, and enhance it to add new features.
