Variable Torsion Converter - Partially engaged electromagnetic clutch
Power Output Shaft variable torque converter partially engaged Power Input Shaft
Ferromagnetic fluid adhering to magnetized power input plate

This is what happens when the accelerator pedal is first depressed. As current begins flowing through the coils around power input shaft, the ferromagnetic fluid is attracted by the magnetic field of the power input plate. The fluid adheres to the plate and begins to rotate along with it.

Note that the change between the partially engaged state shown here and the fully engaged state shown on the next page takes place gradually. The images here do not show that, but what actually happens is that the ferro magnetic fluid gradually fills the space between the plates and the output plate gradually begins to pick up energy much like a conventional clutch.

One major difference is the transition is electrically controlled by varying the current flow to the coil surrounding the power input shaft. There should be one or two additional phases shown, but for now there is just an abrupt jump to the fully engaged state.
